Inlays and Onlays

For larger cavities or a tooth with decay in more than one area, an inlay or onlay may be the best restorative solution. These restorations offer a simple yet effective treatment, and can often be a great alternative to full porcelain crowns.

Your Gentle Dental Experience

At Gentle Dental Fort Belvoir, we provide inlays and onlays for damaged teeth or decay within a tooth’s cusp. Inlays and onlays can be made with either cast gold alloy or with tooth-colored ceramic or porcelain materials. Inlays apply to cavities in the grooves, or pits and fissures, of the tooth’s biting surface. Onlays are used when the decay includes the tooth cusps. Both are used to restore areas where tooth decay is present and the tooth structure has been compromised.

What To Expect

2 Appointments

Initial Appointment

In your initial visit, we’ll clean and prepare the damaged tooth for a 3D digital scan. This scan is quickly transformed into a digital model and sent to our lab technician to craft a unique inlay or onlay for your tooth. Dr. Nguyen will then create a temporary filling to protect the tooth until your final appointment.

Second Appointment

During your follow-up, your customized inlay or onlay will be ready for placement. Dr. Nguyen will ensure the fit and aesthetics are perfect before cementing it permanently. It’s a straightforward and effective process!
