Dental Extractions
At Gentle Dental Fort Belvoir, we understand that sometimes a tooth extraction is necessary, whether due to significant decay, advanced periodontal disease, or irreparable damage from trauma.
Additionally, some teeth may be extracted due to misalignment or impaction, or as part of an orthodontic treatment plan. While the idea of tooth removal can be daunting, our team is dedicated to making the process as painless and stress-free as possible, ensuring your comfort every step of the way.
The removal of a tooth can impact chewing, jaw joint function, and cause shifting of adjacent teeth, affecting your overall dental health. To prevent these issues, Dr. Nguyen will explore all alternatives and discuss replacement options for the extracted tooth.
Your Gentle Dental Experience
What To Expect
45 min – 1.5 hours
During the extraction, the area around the tooth will be numbed with a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. The tooth is then gently loosened and removed.
You may feel pressure during the extraction as the tooth is rocked to widen the socket for removal. Immediately after the tooth is removed, gauze pads are placed for the patient to bite down on the tooth socket to apply pressure and stop bleeding.
Post-operative Instructions
After the extraction, forming a blood clot is crucial for stopping bleeding and starting the healing process. Bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes immediately after the procedure. Repeat as necessary if bleeding continues.
Avoid disturbing the clot. Don’t rinse vigorously, use straws, smoke, drink alcohol, or chew near the extraction site for 72 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours to minimize bleeding.
After Your Appointment
Post-extraction, some pain and swelling are normal. Apply an ice pack to minimize swelling. Take prescribed pain medication as directed. If antibiotics are prescribed, complete the course even if symptoms subside.
Drink plenty of fluids and eat soft, nutritious food on the day of extraction. Resume normal eating as comfort allows. Continue your dental hygiene routine to aid healing and maintain a clean mouth.
If you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, prolonged swelling, or a reaction to medication, contact Gentle Dental Fort Belvoir immediately.
